Safer lorry scheme
The Safe Lorry Scheme looks to implement quick and comprehensive changes to current safety requirements to vehicles over 3.5 tonnes. The outlined provisions aim to reduce the number of accidents and fatalities caused by heavy goods vehicles in and around central London.
The retrofits include the addition of Class V & VI mirrors to enhance the drivers’ field of view, enabling vulnerable road users (cyclists & pedestrians) to be spotted more easily. The scheme also requires side guards to be fitted to vehicles to protect cyclists from being pulled underneath the wheels if an accident occurs. The current proposal will see the Safer HGV Zone inhabit the same area as the Low Emissions Zone. Enforcement of the scheme will be done both by the City of London and Metropolitan police forces alongside the DSVA.
